(Am I really that good looking and charming?)
Your Company has just secured a multi-million dollar international contract; all that’s left is to send your top executive to seal the deal. The Travel Department makes airline reservations, obtains the visa, and, oh yes, schedules the COVID Test. Your executive arrives in-country and, lacking a company security travel advisory, spends the evening jet-lagged and ‘chatting up’ an attractive “30 years his junior” at the local bar. Before the executive knows it, he is being invited to “someplace quieter.” Thirty minutes later, the executive is regretting the impulsive decision–he has been brusquely bundled into in the trunk of the younger friend’s car, traveling down a dark, bumpy road to a location that’s lacking in ‘turndown service.’
Unfortunately, some employees ignore common sense convincing themselves, “Yes, being ‘hit on’ by a much younger “10” seems perfectly normal,” despite all signs to the contrary. Unfortunately, the honey-trap scenario with the executive heading down a dark, bumpy road in a foreign country plays out too many times when companies lack security protocols for travel to high threat environments. The best the company can hope for is their employee isn’t murdered or assaulted and sensitive corporate information compromised, causing financial and potential reputational damage.
By the way, the above scenario describes a male executive victim. However, in the real world more than 1/2 of kidnapped victims are women. Organizations must be proactive in protecting their personnel, brands, and reputation.
